Birth name: Vincent van Gogh
Born: 30 march, 1853
The Netherlands
Died: 29 July, 1890
France
Movement: Post-impressionism
Initially he was an art dealer. Later he established himself as a pioneer of expressionism. His stroke of brushes unfold a new world of colors in front of us.
He produced more than 2,000 works, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches, during the last ten years of his life. Most of his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life, during which time he cut off part of his ear following a breakdown in his friendship with his friend Paul Gauguin. The above picture is a self portrait where we can see the bandaged artist. He gifted his ear to a waitress (or his so called girl friend).
Diagnoses which have been put forward include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, syphilis , poisoning from swallowed paints, and temporal lobe epilepsy. Any of these could have been the culprit and been aggravated by malnutrition. Overwork, insomnia, and a fondness for alcohol, and absinthe in particular.
